For three nights, we will explore one of the most fascinating and deeply devotional corners of Mexican folk spirituality: our relationship with the ánimas who are still petitioned today.
We’ll go much deeper into the ánimas included in Mexican Magic—their stories, prayers, offerings, petitions, beliefs, and the folk magic surrounding their devotion.
But this time, we’re also opening the door to the material that didn’t make it into the book.
The ánimas whose stories were too dark.
The devotions that required more context.
The petitions that could make a sensitive reader uncomfortable.
And the folk practices that deserve to be discussed within the living tradition that gave them meaning.
We’ll explore who these ánimas are, why people pray to them, what they are petitioned for, how they are traditionally approached, what is offered to them, and the beliefs and folk magic that have developed around their cults.
Because not everything our ancestors prayed about was beautiful.
Not every spirit was approached for beautiful things.
And not every Mexican devotion fits comfortably inside the pages of a book.
For three nights, we’ll explore both: the ánimas I was able to put in the book—and the ones I had to leave out.
