The Tradition of Magic Powders

The use of magical powders is as old as the world itself. Across cultures and centuries, there are ancient books and whispered teachings that speak of their power. Powders are among the most practical tools in folk magic.

My grandmother used to say, “The best brujería is the one nobody notices,” and powders are the perfect example of that quiet, subtle art.

But how do these powders work? It is simple and profound: when they are prepared, the magical properties of specific ingredients are awakened and charged through ritual. Each blend carries its own purpose—some to draw love, some to protect, some to bend another’s will—and not all powders are harmful.

Yet, their reputation is often infamous. For example, there are love powders that can be sprinkled on a beloved’s bedsheets to stir passion and exert influence. Others are more dangerous, intended to harm or undo, and these must be handled with the greatest care. In many traditions, such powders are scattered where a target will step—on a doorstep or within a path—because in Mexican folklore it is understood that many physical and spiritual forces, including illness and enchantments of love, enter through our feet.
