Tequixquitl (Nahuatl): The Mineral Salt of Ancient Mexico

Tequesquite, also known as tequexquite, takes its name from the Nahuatl word tequixquitl. It is a naturally occurring mineral salt composed primarily of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and sodium sulfate.

Used in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times, tequesquite was traditionally gathered from mineral crusts formed in the ancient lake environments of Central Mexico. Although it has long been used in Mexican cooking as a seasoning and alkaline ingredient, it also holds an important place in traditional spiritual cleansing practices.

Spiritual uses:

• Spiritual Cleansing (Despojo): Add a small amount to water when cleansing floors, patios, entrances, or ritual tools.

• Cutting Away Heavy Energy: Use when the energy surrounding a person, place, or situation feels stuck, heavy, stagnant, or difficult to remove.

• Neutralization: Use after a strong limpia as an element representing the neutralization of whatever has been removed.

• Threshold Protection: Add a small amount to spiritual preparations intended for doors, windows, entrances, or property boundaries.

After using tequesquite in a limpia, dispose of the remaining preparation outside the home and do not reuse it.
